Dairy farm energy efficiency tool

The dairy farm efficiency tool is designed to provide you with an indication of how your dairy farm compares against other dairy farms in terms of energy efficiency, and estimate the savings that you could make through improvements to your milking shed.

You will be asked to provide information about your dairy production (including your annual milk solid production, the amount of electricity you currently use in your dairy shed, the location of your farm, and whether you have a heat recovery system and vat insulation in place).  The tool will then provide you with an output that places you on a graph that indicates your energy efficiency compared to other audited farms, and will estimate how much you could save by taking various steps.

The dairy farm efficiency tool incorporates data sourced from the DEEP project and EECA dairy shed initiatives.

The dairy farm efficiency tool assumes that installing a heat recovery system will result in a 24% saving, installing a variable speed drive will result in a 12% saving, and insulating your vat will result in a 6.5% saving.

While the tool can be used to provide a useful estimate, results may vary depending on the location of your dairy farm, and the systems and set up of your dairy farm.

Milk vat insulation savings calculator

The milk vat insulation savings tool is designed to estimate how insulating your milk vat could help reduce your energy costs and speed up chilling. This tool is only applicable to outside vats and for the main vat if your farm has more than one vat.

You will be asked to provide information about your vat size, electricity unit costs, and the location of your farm.  The tool will then provide you with an estimate of the amount of money and electricity that you could save per year if you insulated your vat.  The tool will give you an approximate cost for insulating your vat, and will estimate how long it would take for you to make back the cost of insulation.  
The milk vat insulation savings tool incorporates data sourced from "Vat Insulation Benefit", a study by Jim Miller of Millbridge Consulting Limited.
The milk vat insulation savings tool assumes a typical dairy set-up, and bases its estimation of cooling time saved on average conditions over November, December and January.  
While the tool can be used to provide a useful estimate, results may vary depending on your dairy set-up, the temperature of milk from the precooler, milking time, refrigeration unit efficiency, and how exposed the vat is to the prevailing wind and to sunlight.

The vehicle total cost of ownership tool is designed to assist consumers to easily compare the cost of buying, running and on-selling new vehicles.
You will be asked to indicate your vehicle needs (for example, what purchase price, type, and transmission you are looking for).  The tool will then provide you with a list of vehicles that meet your input requirements.  The tool will compare the estimated costs of different types of vehicles that meet your requirements.

Fuel efficient driving tool

The fuel efficient driving tool is designed to give consumers information about how they may be able to reduce their fuel bill.

You will be asked to provide information about your vehicle, how far you travel annually, your tyre type and pressure, your driving style, how you use your car, and how frequently you service your car.  The tool will then provide you with an estimate of how much money you may be able save annually if you make suggested changes to your driving behaviour.  
The fuel efficient driving tool relies on a range of research about the variables that affect vehicle fuel efficiency. The fuel efficient driving tool assumes a fuel price of $2.00 per litre (petrol) and $1.45 per litre (diesel).

While the tool can be used to provide a useful estimate, results may vary depending on factors such as vehicle condition and any vehicle modifications, driving style, traffic conditions, distance travelled and fuel price variations. Note also that when selecting the least fuel efficient option for each factor, the tool may overestimate the annual savings.
